Be The Parent Your Child Needs In Quarantine
For most of us, COVID-19 is the most life-altering event we've ever experienced. It seems like in the blink of an eye, all of our lives were uprooted from normality. Though they may not show it, your children may be more affected by this event than they choose to reveal. Now is the perfect opportunity to be there for them, and offer them the support they need to get through this.
Acknowledge The Stress They Feel
Understandably, the results of the pandemic have altered your day-to-day life quite drastically. Adjusting to these new daily routines implies a great level of stress. Don't let that stress cloud over your children's stress. They may not ascertain the same level of responsibility an adult holds, their lives have been affected just the same. Their normal outlets for socializing, exercising, learning and simply being a kid no longer exist in the same capacity they once knew. Recognizing their struggle during all of this is the first step.
Implement Routines
It's impossible to create routines identical to the ones they had before COVID-19. However, creating micro-routines that simulate an ordinary day can ease their stress. Studies show that having regular mealtimes boosts metabolism and overall well-being. Now, there is no need to wake your kid up at the crack of dawn for breakfast, rather, setting designated meal times each day will give them something to look forward to.Don't crowd their new routines with unnecessary events. Add things to their routine that they would've done on a normal day. These things can include schoolwork, socializing, gaming, exercise, etc. The importance of these routines is critical to mental health. Giving your child something to do during days when it feels like there is nothing to do is imperative.
Be Patient
This is the most important step. Most likely, these changes to everyday life have and will continue to cause plenty of aggravation in the household. Your children, as well as you, will take time to adjust to this new way of life. Understanding and being patient with each other will promote better mental health and make all of your lives less stressful. These changes to your lifestyle will not be effective immediately. However, once used to them, you and your child will be strong enough to get through these trying times.Of course, with any questions, comments or concerns, please reach out to me.
